Day Three in the diorama building house

So I got back into the garage last night to continue working on the diorama. I didn't get too much done as I spent a good 30 mins cleaning and reassembling my airbrush after a really big deep clean.

Once that was done I lay done a dust layer to the tarmac section and more of a colouring layer to the earth. Utilising lighter shades to add dusting to the sand. I then made a different earth works mix, made out of plaster, gulf war sand, beach sand, light dust, a smidgen of europe dust, a splosh of some VMA sand shades, a splash of VMA white and lashings of vallejo matt varnish. I made this into a real putty like mix and smeared and tapped it all over my sand area.

Once this was one, I threw done a few different shades with the airbrush in the troughs that have ben created by wheels. Just to add a little more shape and texture to the base.

Obviously once that was done I got far too excited with myself and mocked up the venator onto the base.

And here's a few close ups of the decals on the venator.

This is quite an exciting project for me and I hope your enjoying following along. Any questions regarding the techniques etc, I'm more than happy to help.

looking really good! I'm not really following what you mean by the dust layer (as in all the different names that you use) - but thats my inexperience.

will there be a model holding a speed gun?

Thanks bud.

A dust layer is quite a simple one really. It's painting a really thin / transparent layer of paint onto a surface so it looks like dust. The technique as far as I know is predominantly an airbrush technique. You might be able to achieve it with the spray gun but it will be difficult.

To achieve transparency you need to have well thinned paint, apply very little air pressure / paint mix.

It's simple once you have a go... In a nut shell it's a layer of paint applied with an airbrush to look like dust. It's great applied on tanks around the tracks.

As for the speed gun. :D no. However, I'll have some dudes round the back of the scene doing some stuff with oil cans etc. Or reading maps / papers.

lol, i can barely get a full basecoat with that rubbish!

i must say, your techniques have improved considerably and constantly since we met - i'm impressed. perhaps that brotherly competitive streak is paying off lol.

looking forward to the next installment!

Lol, thanks.

Though I've no been too competitive with mart on this.... You just need your brother to take it up!

What are doing with your paints with the spray gun? Plain water to thin or screen wash? And how much are you thinning? How does it apply to the model? Spattered as if there is an oily surface or struggle to get paint through?

Thats coming on very nice sir.
Again like Drax didnt really understand much of what you was talking about till you explained it in your first comment. Looking forward to seeing the finished piece.
Might have to look into buying a Air brush if you get those sort of results.
lets see some more pic's soon

Thanks :D

Getting an airbrush is a worth while investment. You don't need to go expensive... just buy the right stuff such as a dual action airbrush and a compressor. Even if it's just to apply a base coat it's worth it.

No pics from last night as I polished off a bottle of wine to myself, but aiming to get some more stuff tonight.
